Bespoke Media Unit – Custom Carpentry Project
This bespoke sitting room media unit was completed for a previous client prior to relocating for work to North Devon. As an experienced carpenter and joiner, I worked closely with the clients during the initial consultation to discuss several custom carpentry projects within their home, with this made-to-measure media unit being the first to move forward. The clients provided inspiration images along with clear specifications, including unit depth, shelving layout, and allowances for concealed cable routing. All details were carefully discussed and developed into a scaled drawing to ensure the final bespoke joinery suited both the room and the client’s needs.

Once the design was agreed, I was able to price the project accurately based on the approved drawings. The custom cabinetry was designed with an airflow gap behind the units, allowing for effective cable management while maintaining a clean finish. The drawings also produced a detailed cut list, enabling all materials to be cut precisely to size and prepared in the workshop before installation. This approach is a key part of my carpentry process and helps ensure accuracy, efficiency, and a high-quality finish on site.

During installation, the first task was to cut the carpet back, as it was being removed anyway. This allowed extra flexibility when scribing the skirting neatly to the floor without the carpet obstructing the work. There were two existing sockets that needed to remain accessible, so once the media units were levelled and positioned, the socket locations were carefully marked and cut out in the back panels to maintain full functionality.

With the bespoke units fixed securely in place and checked for level and alignment, the internal shelves and structural components were fitted, ensuring everything sat square and true. The pre-planned cable routes were left clear behind the units to allow for future TV or lighting installation without disturbing the finished carpentry.

The face frames and front panels were then fitted, creating clean lines and a seamless built-in appearance that integrated neatly with the existing skirting and surrounding features. All fixings were concealed, and the work area was left clean and tidy.
The finished result was a high-quality bespoke media unit, handcrafted to provide practical storage, neat cable management, and a clean built-in focal point for the sitting room.

Now based in North Devon, I provide professional carpentry and joinery services, specialising in bespoke media units, fitted furniture, custom cabinetry, and made-to-measure carpentry. All work is designed, built, and installed to a high standard, with attention to detail from initial design through to final installation.
