Recently, I was contacted by clients in Bideford through my website regarding a bespoke cabinet for their utility room. As a carpenter working across North Devon, I often get asked to create custom storage solutions, and this was a great example of how bespoke cabinets can transform an awkward space.

The area next to the fuse board originally housed a small, tall cupboard, but it wasn’t providing enough usable storage. The clients needed something more practical that would still tie in with the existing units.

Design & Planning

After visiting their home in Bideford to measure up, I carefully assessed the space and took note of the existing cabinet style and colour. Matching new bespoke cabinets with existing interiors is always a priority for me as a carpenter, ensuring the final result looks cohesive and professionally finished.

I created two design options that maximised shoe storage while also incorporating hanging space for coats. The clients chose the second design, which best suited their needs. Once agreed, I provided a full cost and we scheduled the work for around five weeks later.

As this was a smaller bespoke cabinet project, I also took on the decoration. While painting isn’t something I usually include in my carpentry work, I had the time available and was happy to deliver a complete, ready-to-use finish.

Bespoke Cabinet Build Process

Preparation began around two weeks before installation. I created a full cut list and machined all components in advance. Using a consistent system for building my bespoke cabinets helps keep things efficient, though I’m always refining my workflow to improve further.

This unit included nine fixed shelves, as the clients preferred a solid, permanent storage solution. Instead of using visible screws—which can interrupt the clean look of bespoke cabinetry—I used wooden biscuits. This allowed the shelves to be slotted securely into place with rebated edges, creating a strong, hidden fixing.

Attention to detail like this is a key part of my work as a carpenter in North Devon, ensuring a high-quality finish with no visible fixings.

Finishing & Installation

Once assembled, I moved on to painting the unit. The colour match came out slightly lighter than the existing cabinets, but overall it blended well and complemented the room.

Thanks to the preparation work done beforehand, installation in the Bideford property was smooth and efficient, completed in just under six hours.

This was a really rewarding project that shows how bespoke cabinets can completely improve storage in a home. The clients now have a practical and well-designed solution that fits perfectly within their utility room.
