Floating Shelves: A Carpenter in North Devon on What Actually Works

I’ve got a bit of a love–hate relationship with floating shelves. Over the years, I’ve tried just about every fixing method on all kinds of wall types. I’ve even tried to steer clients away from floating shelves in the past.

Although I haven’t been in North Devon long, I bring years of hands-on carpentry experience with me, and floating shelves remain just as popular here as they are everywhere else. They don’t seem to be going out of fashion any time soon, so getting them installed properly is essential.

Floating Shelves in Alcoves – A Straightforward Job

When floating shelves are installed between walls, such as in alcoves, the process is fairly straightforward.

You’re fixing into:

  • Both side walls

  • The back wall

This creates a very strong structure. I’ve installed hundreds of floating shelves in alcoves over the years, and I’ve never had a report of sagging or shelves pulling out of plumb. It’s a method that works reliably every time.

The challenge comes when shelves are installed on a single wall, with no side support.

The Best Way to Fix Floating Shelves to a Single Wall

From my experience as a professional carpenter in North Devon, the only method I trust for open spaces is:

M12 Threaded Bar with Chemical (Resin) Fixings

This approach keeps floating shelves:

  • Level

  • Strong

  • Resistant to sagging over time

My Floating Shelf Installation Method

Measuring and Drilling

I measure everything carefully and space fixings evenly — balance matters, both structurally and visually.

  • Holes are drilled with a 16mm masonry bit

  • This allows enough room for the chemical resin to fully bond

  • All holes are cleaned thoroughly to remove dust

Installing the Threaded Bar

I use M12 threaded bar, cut to around 200mm.

  • Each bar is test-fitted to check it’s level and square

  • I slightly angle them upward to allow for any minor settling

  • Because chemical fixings set quickly, each bar is numbered to match its hole

The holes are then filled with resin and the bars installed accurately.

Preparing and Fitting the Shelves

The shelves are laid over the bars and marked:

  • Marks are transferred to the back edge, centred in the material

  • Holes are drilled gradually up to 13–14mm

  • A drill block is used to keep everything plumb

If everything lines up, the shelves slide straight on. Minor adjustments can be made with gentle taps or slight clearance in the shelf holes.

Floating Shelves Installed Properly in North Devon

Floating shelves can be temperamental, but when installed using proven carpentry methods, they’re solid, reliable, and long-lasting.

If you’re looking for a carpenter in North Devon who focuses on doing things properly — even the fiddly jobs — floating shelves can be installed with confidence and without compromise.
